I know, I know, the Blackwater group changed their name. There is not technical mercenary group by that name any longer. Fine. But let’s not get hung up on semantics.
Back in the 90s people in the tactical gun training “scene” knew “Blackwater” as a training base – sorta like how we started calling “Al-Qaeda” a group, even though it was Islamic Jihad’s training base that Osama bin Laden financed… But I digress. The point is that Blackwater is what we know the American private military company, founded in 1997 by Erik Prince as. Prince renamed the group “Blackwater” after they started taking a lot of heat for abuses and even murders as contractors overseas. The company was renamed “Xe Services” back in 2009, and then only two years later they changed their name again to “Academi” in order to dodge criticism and accountability.
So call these guys whatever you want, but their reputation precedes them. I’ll stick to calling them “Blackwater.”
Recent reports have been circulating out of Ferguson and St. Louis that people who look either like Army Rangers or possibly “Delta Force” Operators have been seen near the presumed sites of upcoming protests.
But others have speculated that what people are seeing is a different animal entirely: military contractors, like or possibly identical to “Blackwater”.
The description that has been circulating throughout social media maintains that the guys spotted are large framed, muscular, Caucasian, bearded, wearing khaki SWAT style pants, and the characteristic “shemagh” or “kefiyyat” scarves that so many special forces and military contractors have adopted overseas in the past decade and a half.
Furthermore, these characters were all seen driving unmarked SUVs, which would seem to indicate that they are not soldiers, but instead contractors.
